Owner?s Anguish as Beloved Pet Horse Gets Stuck in Quicksand

After hours trapped in thick, swampy mud on Avalon Beach, Australia, 18-year old Astro was heroically freed by his owner and rescue workers.

Nicole Graham was riding along the beach when her steed began to be swallowed up by the quagmire. She quickly released her daughter?s smaller horse from the quicksand but by the time she got back to Astro he was in major trouble.

She later said of the bizarre terrain, ?I?ve been riding here for 20 years and never had a drama, I?ve never seen any signs and I didn?t realise it was so boggy.?

In a race against the incoming tide, the young mother and equine dentist struggled to comfort her beloved pet and to keep his head out of the muck as water rose around them. Thinking these would be their last moments together, Graham was frantic and terrified. ?When I saw the dust from the rescue trucks I was so relieved. I was starting to get overwhelmed.?

Local fire crews, farmers and veterinary teams had rushed to the scene to help in Astro?s resuce. The local resuce helicopter was even put on standby to assist as a last resort. Vet Stacey Sullivan sedated the exhausted horse before he was winched out of the mud using a farmer?s tractor, just a few minutes before the tide came in entirely.

Thankfully, Astro managed to go away with just some bruising and dehydration. The vet at the scene said that his survival was mainly down to the tireless efforts and care of his brave owner, Nicole: ?A lot of horses don?t make it and I think without the owner there the chance of survival would have been a lot lower? she said.
