Indonesian court hears militant behind church blasts
A convicted Indonesian terrorist said suspected Bali bomber Umar Patek also prepared the explosives used in a string of attacks on Jakarta churches in 2000, a court heard Thursday.
Eddy Setiono, who is serving a life sentence for terror offences, told a Jakarta court that he drove a car to several churches on Christmas Eve 2000 while Patek "set up" bombs -- disguised as gifts -- in the back seat.
The bombs were delivered to churches and clergymen killing 19 people and injuring scores more.
Speaking at Patek's trial over the church attacks and the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed more than 200 people, Setiono said the pair wanted to avenge the deaths of Muslims in Ambon and Poso in eastern Indonesia.
Sectarian violence claimed the lives of more than 6,000 Christians and Muslims between 1999 and 2002 in the two towns.
"We did that because of Ambon. Our conscience had spoken to us," Setiono said.
"For the Christmas bombing, I drove the car to several churches in Jakarta... while Umar Patek set up the bombs in the back seat," he added.
Patek, 45, went on trial in February on charges including murder, bomb-making and possession of illegal firearms for the church attacks and Bali nightclubs blasts, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians.
Once the most-wanted terror suspect in Indonesia, who spent nearly a decade on the run, Patek had a $1 million bounty placed on his head by the United States.
He was extradited to Indonesia after being arrested in January 2011 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, where US commandos killed Al-Qaeda chief bin Laden in May.
His trial is expected to last over four months as prosecutors present evidence from 86 witnesses. Prosecutors say they will push for the death penalty.

Willis Lease Finance Reports 2011 Net Income to Common Up 28% Over 2010
Willis Lease Finance Corporation?WLFC?-2.19%?, a leading lessor of commercial jet engines, reported 2011 net income grew 20% to $14.5 million and net income available to common shareholders increased 28% to $11.4 million, or $1.28 per share, up from $8.9 million or $0.96 per diluted common share a year ago.
Willis Lease earned $3.6 million in the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2011, compared to $4.0 million in the fourth quarter a year ago. After payment of preferred dividends, net income available to common shareholders was $2.9 million, or $0.33 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to $3.2 million or $0.35 per share in the like quarter a year ago.
2011 Highlights (at or for the periods ended December 31, 2011, compared to December 31, 2010):
-- Average utilization for the year was 86%, the same as a year ago. With the purchase of a portfolio of off-lease assets just prior to year end, utilization was 82% at December 31, 2011 compared to 90% a year ago. -- Total revenues increased 6% to $156.7 million from $148.3 million a year ago. -- Lease rent revenues increased 2.5% to $104.7 million compared to $102.1 million a year ago. -- Maintenance reserve revenues increased to $39.2 million, compared to $34.8 million in 2010. -- Gains on sale of leased equipment contributed $11.1 million, up from $8.0 million a year ago. -- Total net finance costs decreased 13% to $35.4 million compared to $40.7 million in 2010, reflecting the maturity of higher cost interest rate swaps over the past year. -- Liquidity available from the revolving credit facility was $117.0 million at year end, up from $54.0 million a year ago. -- Repurchased 434,748 shares in 2011 at an average price of $13.02 per share, up from 367,483 shares at an average price of 11.31 per share in 2010. -- Book value per common share was $22.48 compared to $21.24 a year ago.
"Economic headwinds continue to buffet the aviation industry, including high fuel costs, tight margins and sluggish passenger demand in many regions, which has resulted in a steep decline in overall airline profitability in 2011 compared to 2010," said Charles F. Willis, Chairman and CEO. "On top of that, the industry has been shaken by a rash of airline bankruptcies including American Airlines, Malev, Spanair, Avianova and World Airways. Despite the industry turbulence, Willis Lease still managed to generate not only a reasonable profit but also a healthy increase over the previous year."
?We are continuing to make progress on many of our key strategic objectives including expanding our access to capital, deepening our industry relationships through joint ventures and other alliances and further penetrating the regional market,? Willis continued. ?In 2011, we expanded our capital base through the establishment of a $345 million, 5 year revolving credit facility which can be upsized further to $450 million. We were also excited to launch a promising engine leasing joint venture with Mitsui, which provided a new source of both debt and equity capital. Also, we purchased eleven ATR turboprop aircraft and seven engines late in the fourth quarter of 2011, further expanding our existing regional aviation portfolio. We are very pleased with the demand for these assets and have received significant interest from several operators for lease or outright purchase. To date, we have leased one engine and have signed letters of intent for the lease of three aircraft.?
?The available supply of certain engine types continues to outpace demand,? said Donald A. Nunemaker, President, ?which increases the level of competition for each lease opportunity. As a consequence, our portfolio utilization is less than where we?d like it to be, and lease rates on many new transactions continue to be under pressure. We ended the year with a portfolio utilization of 82%, however late in the fourth quarter we added $26 million of aviation assets to our portfolio which were not on lease at year end. Asset acquisitions just prior to quarter end contribute little if any revenues during the quarter and adversely impact the period end utilization rate. Once these assets are leased or sold in the normal course of business, a more normal utilization results.?
?Lower hedging costs contributed to the 13% decline in net finance costs during 2011,? said Brad Forsyth, Chief Financial Officer. ?Payments made under the interest rate swap agreements dropped to $11.3 million in 2011 from $18.6 million in 2010. We believe our current hedging position, which covers 54% of our floating rate debt, is adequate and we will continue to monitor interest swap rates to manage our hedge position appropriately based on market conditions.?
The blended federal and state effective tax rate for 2011 was 39.3% compared to 38.8% a year ago.

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) ? Things have only gotten messier at Dartmouth College in the weeks since a former fraternity brother went public with hazing allegations involving swimming in and swallowing vomit.
Senior Andrew Lohse brought the issue to the forefront in January, when he wrote a column in the school newspaper describing "dehumanizing" experiences he witnessed at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. According to Lohse, the fraternity pressured pledges to swim in a kiddie pool of rotten food, vomit and other bodily fluids; eat omelets made of vomit and chug cups of vinegar. He called those activities the norm rather than the exception on the Ivy League campus, and he criticized the administration for not doing enough when he made anonymous complaints last year.
The week after the column was published, more than 100 faculty members wrote to the administration, describing hazing an "open secret" and calling on the administration to set up an independent commission to address it. The college has since formed a task force and brought hazing charges through its judicial affairs office against the fraternity and more than a quarter of its members, including Lohse.
Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson declined to comment on those charges, but the fraternity's president, Brendan Mahoney, said all 27 accused students face identical charges relating to new member recruitment in the fall of 2011. But by that time, the fraternity had gotten rid of any traditions that would be "deemed problematic" by the administration, Mahoney said, and no current members of SAE were members in 2009 when Lohse was a pledge.
As for Lohse's graphic allegations, "None of these practices, and nothing remotely close to hazing, occurred at our pledge events in 2011," he said in an email to The Associated Press.
Dartblog.com, a blog written by former students about the college, obtained a copy of the letter notifying Lohse of the charges against him. According to the letter, Lohse is accused of threatening physical harm to new fraternity members, putting other students in fear for their safety and/or engaging in hazing during the fall 2011 term. He also is accused providing alcohol to underage students, providing drugs and/or providing alcohol to obviously intoxicated individuals during the same time period.
The charges filed were identical for the other individuals, "even though Lohse's tale does not describe them as engaged in the same activities," said Mahoney, who said students have been charged "without a shred of real evidence." Administrators, he suggested, are panicking in the face of bad press.
"We do know that Dartmouth has come in for a lot of bad publicity because of Lohse's allegations. We hope Dartmouth's administration will focus on the evidence rather than on a public relations strategy," he said.
Lohse declined to comment Monday, citing an agreement with another publication. Johnson, the college administrator, strongly denied both Lohse's allegation that the college failed to act on his initial complaints and Mahoney's suggestion that the recent charges were brought to quell criticism.
"When we get detailed, specific information regarding hazing or any other violation of our code, we act," she said. "This isn't a witch hunt, nor are we sitting on our hands."
She said the administration already had been working hard to tackle the issue of hazing and was not simply responding to the recent allegations and faculty pressure.
For example, the college hired a new director of Greek organizations who had been credited with turning around the fraternity and sorority system at another college, has hired two sexual assault coordinators and is in the process of hiring another alcohol and drug abuse counselor. The college sees hazing as part of a larger problem, tied together with binge drinking and sexual assault, and has taken steps to address all three through the National College Health Improvement Project it launched last year.
"Clearly we put our resources where our mouth is," she said. "This idea that we have somehow thrown up our hands, said there's nothing we can do about hazing or other high risk behavior going on on college campuses is a complete mischaracterization."
Johnson also said college officials did everything they could when Lohse made his anonymous complaints, but the tips he provided didn't pan out.
Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone, who also investigated at the time, agreed. Based on information Lohse provided, police set up a stakeout in a wooded area in December 2010 but nothing they witnessed among pledges and SAE members amounted to hazing, he said. Police began investigating again after Lohse's column was published, but criminal charges are unlikely, Giaccone said, in large part because Lohse is not cooperating with police.
"We also realized that based on his past history with us, that he may be a witness that would have credibility issues, and it may hard to rehabilitate him in the eyes of judge or jury if we ended up going that route," Giaccone said.
Those credibility issues include Lohse's 2010 arrest and conviction for cocaine possession and witness tampering and a 2011 disorderly conduct conviction, following a confrontation with a security officer during Homecoming Weekend festivities.
"The opinion of most students is that he has a bone to pick with both the college and SAE," said Stephanie Pignatiello, a senior who said that while she believes hazing happens, she thinks Lohse's claims are greatly exaggerated. But she also agrees with him that the college hasn't done much to solve the problem.
"They seem to be largely absent," she said. "I don't think much will change at the administrative level."
Sophomore Stuart Ghafoor said reading Lohse's condensed description of hazing was "gross," but not a surprise. He thinks SAE is being scapegoated so the college can appear to be doing something to address hazing.
"But if the administration goes after it, it could make it even more underground, which would be more dangerous," he said.

For some, it reminds them of the inhuman act they committed when they ended the life of an innocent child they?d conceived. For others, it brings a sense of joy as they got rid of a child conceived of the beastly act of rape, a child fathered by an irresponsible man, a child conceived of a liar and immature man not ready to start a family.
Abortion is defined as the intentional termination of pregnancy after conception. Women kill the undeveloped embryo or fetus to end the pregnancy.
Abortion has for many years been a controversial subject. However, as the years come and go, more and more countries have softened their stance on abortion. The most recent statistics show that 54 countries, representing 61% of the world?s population, allow abortion. However, 97 countries, representing 39% of the world?s population, have laws that do not permit it. It?s a known fact, however, that abortion is still commonly practiced in most of the countries that don?t allow it.
Good or not, legal or illegal, abortion has its dangers. Any person considering abortion should know the risks associated with the practice. I?ll take a brief look at some of the dangers.
Death
Abortion can end up in death. The causes of abortion related deaths include infection, embolism and hemorrhage. For example, abortion is the fifth highest cause of maternal deaths in the US. However, most abortion related deaths are not reported as such.
Ovarian, Cervical and Liver Cancer
The relative risk of cervical cancer for women who have carried out an abortion is 2.3 compared to women who have not had abortions. The risk is greater for women who have had two or more abortions- 4.92 relative risk. Increased risks of ovarian and liver cancer have also been linked to single and multiple abortions.
Other risks associated with abortion include endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), placenta previa, cervical lacerations, uterine perforation and handicapped newborns in later pregnancies.
Handicapped children in later pregnancies
Abortion is associated with uterine and cervical damage which could lead to increased risk of labor complications, abnormal development of placenta in pregnancies that follow and risk of premature delivery. These are the main causes of handicaps among children who?ve been born.
Other risks associated with abortion include endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, placenta previa, cervical lacerations and uterine perforation.
For all of the above mentioned risks of abortion, there is increased risk for women who have had multiple abortions. This is noteworthy since 45% of all abortions are repeats.
In my view, since some of the risks associated with abortion are grave; for example death, abortion should be carried out only when one is in a very difficult situation.

We don't get many tornadoes in western New York State, but they do seem to find mobile homes when they do hit.
I am considering a double-wide mobile home for a retirement home because the cost differential between a small one story stick built home and a double wide is so large. I thought a modular home would be a good compromise, but after some investigation, I think that may not be the case. They seem to be pricier than stick builts, especially for small ones.
Having lived for two years in Nebraska, I don't think I would feel safe living in a house without a basement or some kind of storm shelter. I don't use my current basement for anything but the furnace and hot water tank, but it's there if I need to gather up the dog, cats, flashlight, and radio and head down there.
