We make our eye movements earlier or later in order to coordinate with movements of our arms, New York University neuroscientists have found. Their study, which appears in the journal Neuron, points to a mechanism in the brain that allows for this coordination and may have implications for rehabilitation and prosthetics.

Researchers have sought to understand the neurological processes behind eye and arm movements. For example, when you reach for an object, what goes on in our brains so that our eyes and arms are in sync? Such coordination is central to the way different systems of the brain communicate with each other, and these undertakings are surprisingly complicateddue to differences in weight, for instance, the arm takes longer than the eye to move.

The question is vital to rehabilitationa better understanding of these neurological processes may help address the needs of those who have suffered brain injuries and struggle to coordinate movements among different parts of the body. In addition, new insights in this area could lead to more advanced neural prosthetics, which are artificial extensions to the body that restore or supplement function of the nervous system lost during disease or injury. Currently, these devices are somewhat primitive given our relatively limited knowledge of how the brain works to coordinate movement.

In their study, the NYU researchers examined the neurological activity of macaque monkeys while the subjects performed a variety of tasks that required them to either reach and to simultaneously employ rapid eye movements or to only use rapid eye movements, also known as saccades.

The resulting readings revealed significant coherent patterns of firing of neurons in the brain's posterior parietal cortex (PPC) when both the eyes and arms were required to move for the same task, but not for tasks that involved only saccades. The patterns of firing were found in regions of the PPC that are specialized for moving either the eye or the arm.

Coherent patterns of firing may be due to these different brain areas communicating when coordinating movement, the research team concluded.

"We think we have a mechanism for coordination," explained Bijan Pesaran, a professor in NYU's Center for Neuroscience and the study's senior author, adding that the finding is only a step and additional study is likely to reveal a more complex process. "Our findings show it is the patterns of activity in a specific region of the brain just prior to both saccades and reaching that are important."

In addition, their data showed a coordination of movement between the eyes and arms.

"The brain adjusts timing of eye movements, depending on how long it takes to start moving the arm," Pesaran explained. "Our study is asking how information flows between the arm and eye movement systems, and it shows how coherent patterns of neural activity are important to this communication."

The study's other co-authors were Heather Dean and Maureen Hagan, postdoctoral fellows in NYU's Center for Neural Science.

The research was supported by grants from: the National Science Foundation; the National Institutes of Health; NYSTAR; the Sloan Fondation; the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience; and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

We're eating out less, opting for chains more

Andrew Gombert / EPA

Chain restaurants are faring better than indepdendents lately.

By Allison Linn

Think of the last time you went out to eat, and be honest: Did you chow down at a favorite locally owned haunt, or opt for the familiarity of a chain restaurant?

A new report from market researchers NPD Group finds that overall, Americans are eating out less than? few years ago, as the weak economy has caused people to cut back on such splurges. Total restaurant visits have fallen every year since 2008, from 62.7 billion restaurant visits that year to 60.6 billion in 2011.

The cutbacks have hit mom-and-pop restaurants much harder than chains. The NPD Group data shows that independent restaurants now account for 27 percent of restaurant visits, down from 28 percent in 2008.

When business falls, closures are inevitable. Although the number of independent restaurants increased slightly between 2008 and 2009, many independent restaurateurs have since had to throw in the towel.

In the past two years, NPD reports that the number of independent restaurants in the U.S. has fallen by 8,652. In that same two-year period, the number of chain restaurants has increased by 1,750.

Do you tend to eat out at chain or indepdendent restaurants?

BP Gulf oil spill trial 'delayed'

The trial to decide who was to blame for the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster, which was due to start in New Orleans on Monday, has been delayed for a week, reports say.

Talks to try to reach a settlement out of court are continuing.

The rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, claiming the lives of 11 workers.

BP could be fined $17.6bn (?11.1bn) if a judge rules the firm caused water pollution through gross negligence.

The spill released more than four million barrels of crude oil from BP's Macondo well.

The UK firm is expected to blame its main contactor, Halliburton, which is a fellow defendant.

BP has so far paid out $7.5bn in clean-up costs and compensation.

US President Barack Obama called the spill "the worst environmental disaster the nation has ever faced".

It took 85 days to permanently stop the release of crude oil.

Fellow contractor Transocean, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig, is also a defendant in the case.

You have to evaluate these problems as well as look into the risks to have these kinds of problems before you at long last assess if you will do your very own tax return or get some aid from a Perth tax return specialist.

Do you consider your own files are easy to work with? Do you have all the required files about income and obligations? Without all the right documentation, doing your personal Perth tax return could be really hard. You will find things that may still be overlooked if you?re not knowledgeable about Australian tax legislations, even when you have bought tax filling software. If your circumstance has just about any strange factor whatsoever, you may be best off getting advice from the tax return professional.

Another prospective downside to performing all of your personal tax return is that if you?re not amply trained in tax rules, you might not be familiar with prospective areas where you could save funds on taxes. Usually, this will lead to not getting refunds or perhaps write offs on taxes owed that might have been probable when some professionals are aiding you with your Perth tax return.

One particular segment of the population of Perth that can surely should get help with their tax return will be the self employed individuals. You might find yourself paying more cash on the income taxes than needed if you do not receive the proper help with your tax return.

When you haven?t registered taxes in a few years, this really is one other reason to obtain help by a Perth tax return specialist. A tax expert who understands local regulations, guidelines, current tax law corrections, and various local rewards which are in place is most likely the best person to help you to file taxes. With out putting you at an increased risk, this kind of expert will allow you to make best use of all the possible deductions. Many people try to be inventive with their particular income taxes but without proper skills, generally, the outcome is not really ideal.

De Soto Replacement Windows - Free Replacement Window ...

De Soto replacement windows are a great way to remodel your Kansas City home. Kansas City replacement window units are relatively inexpensive compared to other home improvement projects of such a large scale. The construction process is also convenient for MO homeowners because the windows are preassembled in a factory. This makes the installation process much quicker and less daunting. Also, you could plan the window replacement according to your budget. If you only have enough money to replace half of the windows in your De Soto home then you could do that. You do not have to commit to replacing every single window in your home at once. By handling the task one window at a time you will not be financially strained and you home will not be out of commission for a long time.

Selling Your Home

De Soto replacement windows are also ideal for Kansas City homeowners looking to sell their home. Replacement window fixtures are ideal remodel projects because they give your home an upgrade on the inside and outside. They increase the curb appeal of your De Soto home by making it look newer. At the same time, replacement fixtures will improve the interior of your home. It is a great idea to paint your home at the same time that you replace your windows. A simple paint job accompanied by your replacement window fixtures will make your home look almost new on the interior and exterior. If you are not selling your home in the near future, there are still many benefits to De Soto replacement windows.

Increasing Energy Efficiency

De Soto replacement windows are a great way to make your home more environmentally friendly and save you some money in the long run. Missouri replacement window treatments mean new slides, cranks, insulation, glass, vinyl, and locking mechanisms. All of these components come together to make your window fixtures more energy efficient. New window fixtures create a more perfect seal and reduce air leakage. During the cold MO winters when you are running your heater at full blast, you could be losing that expensively heated air through the window fixtures. Also, if your windows have better insulation your De Soto home will not be as susceptible to the weather conditions. Windows and moisture especially can have a big effect on the inside temperature of your Missouri home during the winter months.

Likewise, during the summers De Soto replacement windows can help you reduce your air conditioning bill. The sun can beat down on your windows and quickly warm the interior of your home. New window fixtures have better insulation that prevents cold air from escaping and they reduce the effects of the sun. Throughout the year, De Soto replacement windows can help you to reduce your monthly utility bills. This is just another reason why it is one of the most popular home improvement projects that Missouri residents are doing to their homes.

Vinyl Fixtures And Alternatives

Many homeowners shopping for De Soto replacement windows are finding that vinyl is the most attractive and affordable option. Vinyl is an amazing material. Firstly, it is the most energy efficient option. Vinyl does not transfer heat a quickly as the alternatives. Vinyl is also great because it comes in a wide range of color and textures. You can have window fixtures installed that coordinate with the existing colors and d?cor of your De Soto home. Vinyl is also extremely durable. It can withstand the harshest weather condition and even the toughest wear and tear from your family. It is waterproof and does not require expensive cleaning supplies. It can be cleaned simply with water and a wet rag.

There are many alternatives to vinyl De Soto replacement windows. Wood and aluminum are popular materials that are used in window fixtures, and each has its own drawbacks and advantages. Wood is great because of its classical beauty and tradition feel. Many De Soto homeowners prefer wood because it matches much of the structure and furniture already in their house. Wood can be stained and painted to match any style and color. But wood is not as energy efficient or as durable as vinyl. It takes more maintenance and expensive cleaning chemicals to protect wood.

Aluminum is another popular alternative to De Soto replacement windows. Aluminum is not available in as many colors and textures as wood or vinyl. Aluminum is easy to clean but is more susceptible to water as it can rust and deteriorate. In the end, many De Soto residents continue to choose vinyl because it is affordable and durable. So you should not feel overwhelmed by the project, if you plan accordingly it is a very manageable project that will greatly improve your home.

OTHER/NOT SURE
Select this option if you need multiple types or assistance in determining the best type for your project.

SKYLIGHTS
Allow natural light into top floor rooms such as attics that may not have walls for windows.

AWNING WINDOWS
Like casement windows, they crank out, but the sash opens upward instead of sideways.

STORM WINDOWS Protect older windows against energy inefficiency and are an economical option.

SLIDER/GLIDER
These windows feature a sliding track allowing the sashes to move left and right.

Google tests the 'do not track' waters with a Chrome extension

Keep My Opt-Outs
Well, that didn't take long. One day after agreeing to implement a do not track button as part of a new consumer bill of rights, Google has given the people what they want... sort of. Keep My Opt-Outs is a Chrome extension, developed by the Mountain View team, that will prevent advertisers from using your browsing history against you. Presumably, this function will get built straight into the browser one day but, for now, you have to go dig it up in the Chrome Web Store -- far from an ideal solution. Still, a tepid step into the shallow end is better than no step at all. You can install the extension yourself at the source.

Expertise for business owners to help understand and accelerate Sales and Marketing process.

Article by Freshbusinessthinking.com

Leading online resource Freshbusinessthinking.com has teamed up with Sales and Marketing experts Mike Southon and Chris West ? know as the ?The Beermat Entrepreneurs? ? to produce a high impact one-day ?Sales and Marketing Workshop? with the aim of helping business owners and entrepreneurs of small to medium sized businesses to develop and accelerate their skills.

Serial entrepreneur and Financial Times columnist Mike Southon says: ?Many companies fail because they get their sales wrong ? probably more that for any other reason, including finance Companies with excellent products, able people and good-looking marketing plans: none of these matter if real live customers are not persuaded to write out real live cheques.?

He continues: ?Business owners can all too often be haunted by the myths that prevent people from doing sales excellently ? that sales is somehow flashy and dishonest. It is time these myths are replaced with the truth, that in the modern business, everybody sells. The sales role stretches across the entire team, from technical people to the ?sales cornerstone? at the heart of the operation.?

Mike Southon, who has thirty year?s experience of sales across a range of business environments, co-founded his own business in 1984 and was responsible for growing the company to 150 people before selling it to what is now Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. Since then he has been in charge of sales in seventeen start-up ventures.

In 2002, Mike Southon and Chris West (Innovation and Intrapreneurship Advisor; and Marketing practitioner) collaborated to produce the best-selling book ?The Beermat Entrepreneur?, an advisory guide for entrepreneurs and start-ups based on their ?Beermat? methodology for entrepreneurs which has received rave reviews:

?In professional partnerships we like to think we don?t have to sell. This is a dangerous illusion ? luckily Mike Southon and Chris West are here to show us how and why it needn?t be hell. Inspiring and motivational? says John Beevor, BPE Solicitors.

The Beermat Entrepreneurs have since rolled their methodology to thousands of small business founders, corporate managers and business students across the UK, France and America. Chris West says: ?Marketing is the driving force of every small business, but many entrepreneurs are unsure how best to go about it. You don?t need a huge marketing budget to get results, there is a plethora of inexpensive but ingenious ?tricks of the trade? that are guaranteed to pay dividends.?

Chris adds: The afternoon session of the ?Sales and Marketing Workshop? is designed to demystify this essential area of business enterprise, telling you everything you need to know about researching and identifying customers, creating an impressive marketing strategy, building marketing campaigns, and increasing consumer awareness and ? therefore ? sales. We?ll be providing the delegates with crucial insights into online resources and the UK media.?

The ?Sales and Marketing? Workshop on 22nd April 2010 is for business owners and managers both with and without experience of sales and marketing, who want to make more money, become a better marketeer, and who are not afraid to challenge their current strategies. Lively and interactive, this workshop will leave you with ideas and tools you can use immediately to move your sales and marketing processes up a gear.

Family Fighting The Clock To Bring Dying Soldier Home To Kansas

Family Fighting The Clock To Bring Dying Soldier Home To Kansas
UPDATE: Hal Neukirch's family tells us he has taken a turn for the worse.
Reporter: Parrish Alleman
February 17, 2012

We have an update on a Kansas family's efforts to bring a dying soldier home to spend his last few days.

Hal Neukirch was supposed to fly home this Sunday, but a collapsed lung last night put those plans on hold.

Hal's sister tells us he is stable right now, doctors are waiting to put in a chest tube until Saturday morning; she says that's a good sign.

The Neukirchs say this latest health setback is the only thing keeping Hal at Fort Hood.

When we spoke to Hal Neukirch's wife Thursday night, she was already grateful for the donations people had made to bring Hal home.

?I just want to thank every body from the bottom of my heart I don't even know how to express this kind of thanks,? Pamela Neukirch said.

That was just the beginning. All day long people from across the country, have heard the soldier's story and asked how can they help.

?The support and the prayers have been; it's made a huge difference, a huge difference,? Hal's sister Tiffany Neukirch Demo said.

Not only did the Hal Neukirch Jr. Benefit Fund raise all the money needed to pay for the medical flight scheduled for Sunday; EagleMed, a critical care flight service here in Wichita, stepped up and offered to pick up Hal and fly him home, free of charge.

But even though the Nuekirch's have overcome the financial obstacles that stood in the way of their soldier's homecoming; his sudden turn for the worse Thursday night has still put his trip home on standby.

?We've got to hope, we can't do anything else but hope or we wouldn't be standing,? Demo said.

Early Pregnancy Back Pain ? In Layman's ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Back pain and early pregnancy often come synonymous with each other. This pain would usually last for about 20 weeks or five months, and is common with most expectant mothers who are in the initial phases of pregnancy. The simplest way to trace the cause of this back pain (or back spasm) would be the copious amounts of progesterone hormones generated during the first trimester of pregnancy, which leads to the disks and ligaments in the back becoming tender, and back muscles and the left or right side of the quadrant in acute pain. Pregnant women may also suffer from auxiliary conditions during pregnancy that lead to back pain, such as a urinary tract infection. As a pregnant woman?s centre of gravity is altered as she gains in mass and stature, the risk of backaches and back pain would subsequently increase.

Quick Remedies for Pregnancy Back Pain

Exercise is considered the most effective and safest cure for early pregnancy back pain. This is mainly because certain medications for back pain are contraindicated during early pregnancy. Walking, pelvic rocking, bridging (done by lying down on the floor, bending your knees and lifting your buttocks into air), mini-crunches (done by lying down on the floor), bending your knees and lifting your head on exhalation, are good exercises for relief from pack pain during early pregnancy. Pregnant women do these exercises on their own relieve back pain during their pregnancy.

Another strong defence against early pregnancy back pain would be keeping the right posture and maintaining a technically perfect stance. Ramrod straight would be the best and only posture to prevent or relieve back pain in early pregnancy. Putting the right posture into practise is not easy, but if at all, should be emphasised even before early pregnancy even happens. In late pregnancy, however, it is common for women to pull their shoulders back to nullify the effects of the additional weight caused by the enlargement of the uterus ? this would invariably lead to back strain. You can reduce back pain during later stages of pregnancy in such a position by frequently changing your sitting position and avoiding standing for long periods.

Adequate rest and sleep are also essential for avoiding or eliminating early pregnancy back pain. Avoid any stressful or tiring activities and get enough rest so you do not suffer back pain during pregnancy. Yoga exercises can also be utilised as a way to deal with minor back pains. However, if the back pain persists you should consult your doctor and take proper medication for relief from back pain during pregnancy. Physiotherapy is a frequently described form of relief by these doctors, and applies to many types of back pain during pregnancy. Massages and use of special mattresses are also effective for back pain relief during pregnancy.
